My dad, Edgar A. “Smitty” Schmidt, started working for the Kreuz family at the age of 13. He bought Kreuz Market in 1948. My family and I grew up at his pit. Today, our family is still tending that same fire in that same 1924 building at Smitty’s Market in downtown Lockhart. This old building’s seasoned pit is where the legend of Lockhart BBQ began.
